PETITION IS CLOSED. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
I find Town Manager Hazen Blodgett’s response of the petition interview being “premature” interesting. Below is page written by Matthews Town Clerk during the 2015 Planning Conference and approved minutes by the Council. This statement was made by Corey King director of Matthews Parks and Recreation on February 27th.

In memory of Mr. Neubert Purser the Purser family and MATTHEWS WATCH is petitioning the Town of Matthews to honor the naming rights as promised. Mr. Purser’s farm was condemned by the Town of Matthews for a park. The planning of the park has begun and on February 10, 2014 Mayor James P. Taylor “noted that the name of the park has not been established and should not be referenced by anything specific at this time since naming rights have not been committed.” According to the closed session minutes naming rights were promised. Its bad enough that a World War II Veteran lost the fight to keep his farm, but its an injustice not to name the park after him as promised. Furthermore, the family has suffered enough. HONOR THE NAME “PURSER PARK”.
CLOSED SESSION MINUTES – Naming Rights
June 28, 2004 Mr. Chaplin “said the other issue is that Mr. Purser wants to know if the Town would be willing to use his name on the property.” “Mayor Myers “said they would entertain that.” Mr. Chaplin “said he would tell Mr. Purser that the Town would be more amenable to allow him naming rights if the price is reasonable.”
July 26, 2004 Commissioner Taylor “asked if they could condemn the property.”
February 7, 2005 Mayor Myers “said his feeling is to move forward on this. He said it is a win/win situation.” Commissioner Taylor “said he would love to do this.” Commissioner Lester “asked if he thought they could offer $43,000 per acre and say there is a vision for the schools and name it after Mr. Purser.” Commissioner Lester “said they could name the park after him.” Mayor Myers summarized “Authorize Saxby Chaplin to go and tell Mr. Purser that we are moving under eminent domain.” “Move forward on the 14th town vision to put school on the property ($43,000 cushion, life estate and naming park).”
February 28, 2005 Commissioner Taylor “asked if the Pursers are aware that he is an agent for the Town.” Mr. Chaplin “said no, he said he was representing the Public Trust for Land but there was no question about it that they are aware that the Town was the one who wanted to purchase it.”
“The offer was to pay 10% above appraised value and let him stay on the property for life and the park would be named after him.”
July 24, 2005 Town Manager Hazen Blodgett “with life rights and naming rights”
August 14, 2006 “allowing Mr. Purser lifetime rights for occupancy of the premises and allowing him to work his cattle, and have naming rights.”
